Parish Information |
The Parish St. Hugh of Lincoln is a parish congregation of the Roman Catholic faith and tradition within the Diocese of Rockville Centre, New York. About 4400 households are members of the parish, which serves the village of Huntington Station and some adjoining areas. The parish property, on Route 110 between Ninth Street and Pulaski Road, is home to the Church, Center (with Trinity Regional School campus, Religious Education Office, and Parish Outreach Office), Convent, and Rectory (with Pastoral Ministry offices). Our History St. Hugh's was established as a mission of St. Patrick's parish in 1907 in a chapel built on property donated in memory of Hugh McLaughlin (hence our patron saint). We became a parish in 1913. The first school was built in 1925. Church services were held in its basement (larger than the chapel) until 1952 when the new church was completed. The present school was completed in 1956, during a time of great growth in Catholic population in the area (St. Hugh grew to 7000 families). New parishes were formed to the South (St. Elizabeth), East (St. Francis), and West (Holy Name of Jesus) from what had once been St. Hugh, giving us our present size and boundaries. The church was destroyed by fire in 1986, and was restored in accord with the revised Liturgy of Vatican Council II and rededicated in 1987. It was again refurbished in 1998. Our Patron Hugh of Avalon was a French Carthusian monk invited to England by King Henry II. He became bishop of Lincoln (on the Eastern coast) in 1186 and set about rebuilding its cathedral, which had been destroyed the previous year by an earthquake. The work took about 100 years; Hugh died in 1200, and was buried near the High Altar. He is commonly shown in Christian iconography holding a model cathedral and accompanied by a white swan (one of which he is said to have kept as a pet). A statue in our church (to the right of the altar) shows him in this traditional pose. His feast day is November 17. Our People The people of St. Hugh are very diverse. Services are held weekly both in English and in Spanish. Many families have multigenerational histories here, while recent years have seen the arrival of families moving to the suburbs and also of recent immigrants and of refugees from areas of political strife. We respect and celebrate our ethnic and linguistic diversity in occasional celebrations and in multilingual worship services on special days. Parish Support St. Hugh is supported through the stewardship of its members. We ask parishioners to take to heart God's overwhelming goodness to them, and to imitate God's generosity as their hearts dictate, using the Biblical standard of 10% as a goal. The support of each parishioner is vital to our survival as a congregation. Full financial disclosure is made each year in a special issue of the parish Bulletin, and briefer reports about current income and bills are made there weekly. Please visit the Stewardship page for additional information. Parish and Neighborhood St. Hugh recognizes its Gospel obligation to serve persons of all faiths who are in need. We do this through our parish Outreach program, organizations such as the St. Vincent de Paul Society, and joint efforts with other churches and with community and neighborhood groups. Parish Membership Parish Membership is open to any Roman Catholic who wishes to join St. Hugh, in accord with Catholic Canon Law. We ask you to register with the parish office (in the rectory) as soon as you move into the parish, or decide to join, and also to inform us of any changes of address. Parish Leadership A Pastoral Council provides overall guidance to the pastor, and Trustees and a Finance Council care for civil and financial responsibilities.
